6. Good point. Austerity budgets are a relatively new (and disasterous) feature in Europe.

Their trade policies have not changed for decades through good times and bad.

Austerity budgets are an unfortunate consequence of the election of so many conservative governments there. Let's hope that pressure from the new French socialist government and the current trend towards the election of more liberal governments will reverse the trend of austerity.
