They've abandoned the entire Enlightenment, the foundation of American government and politics. What matters to them is absolute belief in some dusty old interpretation of monotheistic myth, the people's wellbeing be damned.

I have problems with religion, even spirituality if it leads one away from evidence and reality, but traditional monotheism is, in my mind, the most vile thought ever conjured in the minds of humans in that regard. It's a pure power play framed in utterly ridiculous religious dogma. So, the OP is correct. There is scant difference from Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Sam Alito, Clarence Thomas, Amy the Handmaid or the entire Christian reich. They spring from the same foul cesspool.
