Americans are a very easily distracted people. If the election were held two weeks from now, I think things would turn around in our favor.
However, when the draft opinion leaked there were protests people instantly forgot about. Seriously, they were gone from major media and social media within 48 hours. Remember March For Our Lives protest a week or two ago? Yeah, no one else does either.
Four months is enough time for people to settle back into their routines. And remember, the people who are more of a partisan liberal bent are already mostly in blue states and districts. What will matter is how much resonance and urgency lasts over the next four months in the swing districts.
I think we can hold the line in November. But I'm not going to say it's any kind of given. As this fades out of the news - and it will, sooner than anyone thinks - and people go back to their routines, the daily stuff creeps back in and takes a more prominent place in emotions and thinking. Most squishy middle people will vote (or choose not to vote) based on how they feel at that snapshot of a moment of voting.
How will those squishy middle types feel by November?
None of us can confidently say.
