He planned a get away. Something mass-shooters committing murder-suicide don't do.

This undeniably was the result of a plan.

Having a plan suggests that he had an end goal.

Not one we would necessarily see as rational, but nonetheless he had an end result that he had thought through, and it included at least trying to get away.

I don't think this is going to turn out to be like most of the other recent mass murders. I think he saw himself on a mission, and I am starting to lean toward believing the Highland Park mayor who thought it was a terror attack was right.
