(8,103 posts)"You've put a lot of assumptions into my mouth that I'm not making." I don't understand this comment.
It doesn't matter what their individual attitudes are. They can always recuse themselves from a repugnant case. If they don't want to do abortions, they don't have to practice in that field. Perhaps post graduate training pushes some that way, but in the end they can choose not to participate. Ectopic pregnancies usually present as an emergency, however, so there is that to think about.
But, it's very draconian to suggest that all docs everywhere are guilty of malfeasance because they now have to adjust to watching their patients have a near death experience because some asshole politician thought he knew better. This isn't an ethics committee decision; it's a legislative decision made by complete idiots.
We are asking our docs, those guys and gals that toe the line, to break the new law. Where, as they defend their malpractice suits, they will either be asked, "Why did you break the law?" or "Why didn't you break the law and save my client?" They can't win.
They all know that an ectopic pregnancy will not produce a viable child. Hell, everyone knows this. It isn't so much an "I am pro life" comment by a politician as it is a "I don't care about the mother or female's position as to whether she can carry an ectopic fetus to term." This isn't a directive to revere life. It's a control issue by politicians who think it's cute to meddle with sound clinical judgement.
This is going to impact so many other facets of life with unintended consequences. Our country has gone mad. Must be a perpetual full moon up, or something.
