(3,987 posts)That both SS & Medicare are grossly underfunded. People on average get quite a bit more back in benefits over the lifetime compared to what they paid in. Urban Institute did a nice report (full if data) on the topic and except for the top income range (Single Male with maximum taxable $137k in 2020) every other group got back more than they paid in. I dont use the word entitlement because of that.
They need to do something. I like the concept of the Sanders bill. A $200 raise monthly and increased taxes to stabilize the system. Its going to be a progressive system (like our tax system) but that isnt such a bad thing.
Democrats need to make SS the focus of the election. Push a bill thru now and let Republicans vote NO on the record than hammer them with it. I think the average American is ignorant as to how these programs work and the benefits of them. They lifted the elderly out of poverty. They need to educate people.
