In the city ? ... yes .... and while there was great property damage in the city, most of the destruction was beyond the city limits ...
I am speaking in large part about those close to the Jersey shore that chose to stick it out with their kids in the house ... Those on Staten Island, which was in the direct path, and was always known to be in the direct path of a surge event in NY Harbor ...
The folks in NYC that do not have cars had fewer options, but to state that 'most of those people' could not do anything to save their lives, or to say that 'most of those people' had no option to leave or anyplace to go, is unfounded and unwarranted.
"Most of those people" did not live in NYC .... The horror stories I have heard involved those who live in a flood zone, who chose to stay, knowing it was coming, and thinking they could ride it out .... My point is: Those that did stay, placing their own children in harm's way, based essentially on a wager that they could beat the odds ... Well, I have little respect for anybody who would do this ....
It isn't heroic ... It is selfish ....
