(17,716 posts)I'm from Ohio but live in Michigan now. In between I lived in the South. When I transferred from a southern state to Michigan I just assumed that I'd leave the racism behind, but my new neighbors in Michigan said to me, " if you think we don't have racism in Michigan and that the South has a lock on that, just wait. Michigan is loaded with rednecks." I have to admit that I didn't believe my neighbors at first, but it didn't take me long to realize that they were so right. I was disappointed.
Being raised in Ohio I am also extremely disappointed in that state. I still would take Michigan over Ohio any day and I still have relatives there. My two grown children and I have several degrees among us and we'd never go back. Ohio seems to be stuck in some time warp. As someone else said, the educated people left and never came back. I left in 1982.
