(36,437 posts)Car ownership per household in New York City is at 46%, which means that most households do not have a car.
More importantly, I was very rude in my response, and I apologize to you for that.
I grew up in an area of Queens where most people have cars (about 85% of households), and that anecdotal experience is borne out by the data. See the map at this link:
http://www.streetsblog.org/2011/04/06/new-yorks-car-ownership-rate-is-on-the-rise/
I would also say that some of the areas most affected are majority car owning households. No area in Staten Island, for instance, has less than 70% car ownership per household, and some of the most affected areas have 90% car ownership.
So, two points to account for my rude behavior:
1) I have an itchy Outer Borough trigger finger for people who think NYC = Manhattan. The lowest car ownership per household is, of course, in Manhattan (sometimes reaching 70 or 80% car-free households) and poorer sections of Brooklyn. What I was reacting to was probably the feeling among non-New Yorkers that NYC looks like Manhattan. In fact, there are vibrant car cultures throughout the Outer Boroughs, and, as indicated, many areas in the Outer Boroughs reach 90% car ownership per household.
2) My nerves are frayed. My parents and friends and family are all in the middle of this shit, and I'm stuck 800+ miles away, looking at the situation on television. I've never felt so disconnected from my place.
So, those are the statistics, but, more importantly, this is my apology for treating you shabbily.
Cheers.
