We don't know what exactly was in the materials collected during the search. Indeed, there would be no need for a "taint team" to be used to review the documents if it was already known that everything collected was covered by the presidential records act. But not every document created during a president's term is necessarily a presidential record. For example, if the records seized included communications between Trump and his personal attorneys, that would be privileged material. And executive privilege comes into play as well when presidential documents are involved (although Trump's not likely to prevail with an executive privilege-based argument in the context of a criminal investigation).

In short, there is a great deal of misunderstanding of the purpose of the Special Master process reflected in DU posts.
