5. Gov Kathy Hochul selected the incumbent (Delgado) in that district for her Lt Governor

That left the seat open. This was a special election to fill the remainder of the term. Two county execs in the district ran against each other. Ryan the Dem and Molinaro the R. The race was tight. Only a few thousand votes apart at the end.
Ryn outperformed Biden's numbers in the district, which is a great thing. It is also considered a bellwether district as it is essentially 50/50 D/R. If the R won, then the news would have been this is a good year for R. But that is not how it ended. The D won, which in a midterm is HUGE.

Pundit heads are flapping guns today.
