You used to get a meal on any significant flight, carry-on + personal item + at least your first bag free. And it's not just the ability to pick a seat - it's the ability to sit with the ones you're traveling with. They seem to deliberately seat you separate unless you pay for the privilege of picking a seat ahead of time.
