(2,578 posts)Denial is a natural human defense mechanism. It kicks in when one's mental or physical equilibrium
is so powerfully disturbed that it makes one extremely anxious and terrified to admit something
actually exists.
Denial is not a healthy way to cope with disruptive/disturbing situations; however, the human drive
to maintain psychological and physiological homeostasis is so strong that when faced with seemingly
insurmountable difficulties, one's subconscious steps in and asserts denial as a coping mechanism.
Denial is a way to repress unpleasant, caustic emotions. Serious psychological damage may affect
those who cant cope with unpleasant facts about themselves or others.
Individuals with anosognosia refuse to think about how their actions/reactions affect family, friends
and themselves. Failing to acknowledge the consequences of not dealing with their affliction is one
way for people with anosognosia to avoid feeling guilt and responsibility.

How would the RTumpster answer these questions???
1. Has a family member or friend ever told you to seek psychological treatment?
2. Do you think everybody is out to get you or doesnt want to see you happy?
3. Do people express skepticism when you tell what you believe about provocative subjects?
4. Do you have trouble keeping a job?
5. Do you have difficulty maintaining close relationships?
6. Do you think psychiatry is a type of pseudoscience?
7. Are you addicted to prescription or nonprescription opioids or stimulants?
8. Have you ever been placed temporarily in a hospital for emergency psychiatric care?
(If the answer is yes to two or more of these questions, the RTumpster may be dealing with anosognosia.)

"Person, woman, man, camera, TV," are not the correct answers.
