The other thing I forgot to mention about the psychology of the military generals:

The military in most countries fights to defend their homeland.
That is their reason for being, that is their oath, duty, mission.

So how does a Russian general square that with taking actions
which will destroy the military and destroy Russia?

Also I wonder what the Russian generals are feeling right now.

Most of the troops are dead, missing, wounded, freaking out of their minds,
retreating, running for their lives and telling the officers to go to hell.

Their expensive dachas and mistresses may be little consolation now.
