Probably Afghanistan in the 1980s which also didn't go as well as they hoped, but that was approx. 40 years ago. Since then, Russia has had major internal changes. In sum, they've lost over 2 generations of military muscle memory for fighting a war like this.
Takes years of building up your armed forces and frequently invading/conquering nations to develop the expertise that it takes to do it well.
