for my own good?
He just can't help lying. Apparently he's been telling this one all year (!) and having trouble keeping versions straight. At one point he claimed a grandmother was 100% Cherokee, then later claimed his mother (her daughter) was 40%.
His mother's denied it but has said some past connection to the Cherokee was a family rumor when she was a child. This could be tested for now, of course.

Not in every jurisdiction in the US. There are may jurisdictions that allow (generally sheriffs)
