Cannot compare then to now.
Then he was an unknown, politically. The illusion that he was a big business titan still existed.
Much of the middle of the road were in "let's try something different" mode. A "what's the harm" mindset.
Now, much of America knows he's not a business genius, he's rotten as president, the "harm" was manifested, and the unknown is gone.
Remember that in '20, he got more votes, but lost the PV by 5 million more votes than in '16.
In '16, there was little motivation to vote AGAINST him. That motivation, especially among the middle, is greater than ever.
