13. I get it constantly

When I’m in the States, the phone rings off the hook with calls from people who I swear are professional fundraisers working on commission.

At least once or twice I get calls that a used car salesman would be embarrassed to make. They are raising money for (they say) Gabby Giffords and her gun control PAC. I stop them and ask if they know Gabby (of course not). I then ask if they are aware that I contribute a four figure amount at the beginning of every year? (of course not). I then explain that Gabby and Mark are personal friends, and know I contribute every year, so what’s with the pushy routine? This gives them pause, but then they come back with, « well, but you could step up again, » blah, blah. I tell them they are the ones stepping in it, and hang up. I have told Gabby and Mark about this, of course, but they aren’t the ones who hire the individual callers. They have to rely on others for that, and they don’t always pick the best people.
