32. Oh for crying out loud

Post offices close ALL THE TIME because crap happens to them: Fires, floods, weather damage, thefts or vandalism. All of them can happen at any time.

I worked at a post office that had to shut down because we had a horrible wind storm that peeled off the rooftop climate control units and ventilation shafts like they were stuck on with Elmer's glue, not bolted to the surface.

We had to wait for fire and safety inspectors to determine if we could get into the building at all. Fire and building inspectors declared the interior safe, at least structurally. Why we had to shut down the facility entirely was because it was summer and thus hotter than hell in there without AC, which made it impossible for employees to work indoors safely.

So the facility itself got shut down. The employees, mail and some of our other services got relocated either to the main post office or a neighboring station, depending on the kind of service involved. There was a brief delay in service until we got the processes sorted out in the new facilities, and then again when we returned "home," but the mail never stopped moving.

So there's no conspiracy here. DeJoy might be a destructive moron, but the rest of the USPS isn't so stupid that they'll shut down the mail over a facility hiccup. They always have contingencies for these things.
