(17,802 posts)Tesla didn't just sell cars, which could conceivably be serviced with after market parts and service techs.
They also sold SW, which is tightly integrated into the cars, it's navigation system, security, performance, and autopilot system. As a Tesla customer, you don't own that SW; you just license it. It could shut down at any time and there would be no way to regain functionality, leaving the car lifeless.
And one other thing they maintain - The distributed charging system. Tesla has thousands of rapid charging stations throughout the country. If those shut down, Tesla owners go from 30 minutes for a full charge to hours and hours, if they can find a competing station.
So this isn't at all like chrysler going under. If tesla goes under, you have a $75k driveway ornament.
