Schiff was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, the son of Edward and Sherrill Ann (Glovsky) Schiff.[2] He was raised in a Jewish family that moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1970 and Alamo, California, in 1972.[3] He graduated from Danville's Monte Vista High School in 1978,[4][5] and was both his class valedictorian[6] and the student his peers voted "most likely to succeed".[7]
Schiff received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Stanford University in 1982 and graduated with distinction.[8] Schiff returned to Massachusetts to attend Harvard Law School, from which he obtained his Juris Doctor, graduating cum laude in 1985.[8][9] Schiff was a member of the Harvard Law School Forum, and his tasks included driving guest speakers including William J. Brennan Jr. from the airport to campus and back.[10] He also worked as a student research assistant for Professor Laurence Tribe.[10]
Start of career
After law school, Schiff spent a year as a law clerk for Judge William Matthew Byrne Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.[11] From 1987 to 1993, he was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Central District.
