the period where, as a young man, I was engaged in left-wing politics. I've been a registered Democrat since reaching the age to vote, but I've had some adventures in this curious life. That includes making friends with good people to the left of the Democratic Party. My kids think it's a giggle that a woodchuck like me, growing up on a poor family farm in the sticks, broke bread with people from the 1960s and early '70s. My oldest son sometimes says, "You used to be a radical, but you've grown soft." I tell him that I just prefer to get things done, and the Democratic Party provides the best avenue towards progress.

Re: question 1. It was a weekend. The house members had been out clubbing and got in around 3:00.
