11. Resisting arrest, passively or actively, generally isn't a smart play.

Fight the charge in court, not in the streets. That's my advice, anyway.

This incident is pretty much a great example of how not to do things. One of the officers on the bodycam video said that Mr. Nichols had stopped at a red light and put on his turn signal after they saw him driving into oncoming traffic. So at that point, pull up behind the car with lights and sirens and get him to pull over. If he takes off, either pursue or don't based on department policy.

If he doesn't take off, approach the vehicle and just do a basic traffic stop since reckless driving isn't a felony stop situation. Instead, they swarmed the car, all screaming different commands, yanked him out, and it just kept escalating from there. Even if it had been a felony stop, that was still the stupidest possible way to go about it.

I've worked for a police department, and they do psychological screening during the hiring process. Even for dispatchers, it was a long and drawn-out process. What should change is regular temperature checks after someone is hired. I think every officer should have a touch base meeting with a psychologist every six months, minimum, just to see how they're doing and where their head is at. If the psychologist thinks there are concerns, then take a closer look and get the officer in question the help they need before something like this happens.

And that isn't even touching the ways in which their training needs to change.
