As for the importance of being able to write, whether essays or news stories - it's communication. Learning to write effectively teaches both communication and reasoning skills. Do you really want a society where humans can't communicate effectively, but AI can? Who do you think will be in charge?
It can't be replaced easily by oral exams, which favor extroverts anyway.
Essay tests - as much as some students hate them (usually the ones who hate school in general, or haven't bothered to learn how to think clearly and communicate those thoughts) - are important for educators. Having students cheat with ChatGPT is a disaster.
