(9,869 posts)I was going to use it, but then wondered if that wasn't going to open a whole other can of mess that would just end up being a distraction. But that is 100% a phrase that was in my head as I read the OP and responded.

Bingo. That's what I think gets revealed in a lot of the commentary. I just don't think people who exist in diverse environments think in this in-group/out-group way all the time. The attitude and rhetoric feels compensatory for something they're not doing. If your life is full of people of other races and experiences with other cultures, you're not spending a lot of time navel-gazing the issue. I don't mean racism in general, which forever needs dealing with, but the concern with having to declare yourself or others are this or that thing. It's like people who talk about how tough they are all day. Actually tough people don't need to declare it. It's self-evident.
And yep on the "magical" trope. Also in my head when reading the description of the other companies. "These people from another race are there to fix my problems." And that's exactly why I used that word.
You definitely picked up what I was throwing down.
