for as long as there have been big machines, their owners and operators kept them going with DIY efforts that helped kept them out of the red with repair bills.

This is an UNFAIR business practice, built on the notion that a computer program in a tractor is a copyright protected piece of intellectual property.

IT's A DAMNED NECESSARY PIECE OF THE EQUIPMENT!!! Equipment that was legitimately purchased. Copyrighting it is like copyrighting the dimensions of a glow-head or spark plug and refusing to share the design of the wrench needed to change it.
