Kashmir is a three way disputed state; Pakistan lays claim, India lays claim, and local Kashmiri groups want independence.

Of course, India is also positioning itself as a major player in the world, not necessarily aligned with the West, but also independent from China. They are willing to leverage resources from these entities, but they're not going to bow down as they feel more confident about their geo-political strengths.
Do not underestimate India, even if their customs are different enough from ours that they seem more like a developing country than an advanced World power. They also have a history of empire, and they learned a lot about modern world politics both during and after the British Raj.
India is a technical and nuclear power house with influences they've seeded in major countries all over the world, even though most of the western world tends only to see the results of a caste system, the "exotic" Hindu religion and relics, and the rest of the tourist sights.
