knee jerk conservatism?

My cousin was married to a guy who joined the Mormon church to further his career in the FBI in the late 70's. It was the reactionary thing to do to thwart the "RADICAL" JIMMY CARTER. This was in the pre-ditto days. The outrage was more subtle but still effective in the ranks of JE Hoover's legacy.
They are unlikely to ever do the right thing if it means enforcement against "conservative" overreaching.
