In reply to the discussion: They could lose the house -- to Medicaid [View all]inthewind21

why this is a surprise. It's right there in black and white when you sign up for medicaid. If you are on SS and go on medicaid and go in to a facility, they take most of your SS and leave you with a monthly allowance. That is also crystal clear when you sign up. Property, Bank accounts, stocks, cars, planes whatever property and any whole life insurance policies in the name of the person receiving medicaid benefits can be taken after death by the state to re-reimburse for what they spent on care. This is why it's best to get it all sorted out BEFORE entering a facility and death

What's the point of Medicaid if they can claw it back when you die? Something reeks. nt

Notice it's only for poor people on Medicaid. Anyone know if Medicare does this on wealthy users?

The point of Medicaid is to make sure there's care for everybody, that no one will lack for care

Why shouldn't people pay for their own nursing home care with earnings they've saved,

But the caretakers can be paid, if the parent has a paid-for home, which is what the OP is about.

States recover .55 percent of what they spend on Medicaid. Not 55 percent: about half a percent.

This is a good incentive for people to commit suicide rather than receive longterm care.
