I hate being lumped in with those who use home schooling as indoctrination camp for their kids.

I did it for the exact opposite reasons. At the time, we lived in Utah. The LDS church is so entwined in the school system, it's organic. There are churches across the street from the schools, and students are allowed out of real class to go to religious classes. The majority of teachers are LDS, and the system just assumes you are as well. When you home school in Utah, you fall into one of two groups - people who are too Mormon (sister wives and all that...) or people who are UN-Mormonized and want their kids to grow up that way. We were the later, and it was the best way to ensure our kids had a secular education.
