(5,405 posts)When we went to the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Des Moines, IA back in Nov. 2003 everyone was proclaiming Kerry's campaign dead in the water. The media told everyone that he would finish fourth or worse in Iowa and that would be the end of it. So when we got down there at an event with pretty much every candidate and hosted by Hillary Clinton there was all of this momentum behind Howard Dean. In fact, we had filled just one small section of the arena when we all got in. A corner section. Dean bussed in people from 3 neighboring states and had a massive four section audience.
Dean spoke before Kerry and got some nice loud responses. Kerry spoke and our little section blew the roof off of the place. People were stunned by our enthusiasm and his Real Deal speech hit all the markers.
I've met the man on several occasions, heard countless speeches of his. He is NOT wooden or boring. He is articulate and when he gets feisty he can be as good of an attack dog as Joe Biden (see his 2008 and 2012 Convention speeches for proof).
It used to piss me off that the media treated Kerry like he was some aloof elitist who couldn't connect with a crowd. I was in the crowds when he spoke and he clearly connected. I also was in a Des Moines bar and he came in and had a beer with everyone (so much for that 'Candidate you'd rather have a beer with' nonsense) and legitimately inquired about people's personal issues, why they were campaigning and what issues mattered to them.
Theresa spoke with me for a good 15 minutes about Head Start programs (my son was in Head Start at that time) and couldn't have been nicer.
I dedicated a year and a half solid to that man and his campaign because I believed in him and knew he would have been the best President of my lifetime. If that's not connecting with people, nothing is.
And lest we forget, if not for John Kerry, we likely would not have had a Barack Obama Presidency. It was Kerry taking a chance on him with the 2004 DNC Keynote that launched Obama. It was Kerry's tireless work as a surrogate that helped defend Obama in the times where he was taking the most political flack. He even stood in admirably playing Mitt Romney in mock debates, sharpening Obama and making him better for that con artist. Whenever Obama has needed someone to defend him it wasn't his staffers that did the best job defending him, it was Kerry.
Our media has been a disgusting propaganda unit ever since Clinton took office. It's entire goal is to kill Democratic and Liberal causes and demonize their beliefs and politicians to the point where they are unelectable and should they somehow slide in, make their momentum unsustainable.
