I read an intriguing comment years ago about why left-leaning politicians and public figures were assassinated during the 1960s: JFK, MLK, RFK, etc. That's how the plutocrats/oligarchs/fascists/corporatists operated.

But then, with the rise of hate radio during the 1980s, the "character assassins" came to the fore. We moved from murdering individuals to murdering their reputations. This became evident with the rise of FOX News.

It became so much more convenient to lie about someone constantly in the media than it was to enlist hitmen from shadowy underworlds to do your bidding. And safer too! Who knows, you just might run across a law-enforcement official willing to investigate an assassination. They just might trip you up and catch you! Better to endorse some Congressional investigation and "official report" pointing to the pre-written narrative.
