It wasn't just liberal politicians who were targeted for institutional whacking during the 1960's political assasination frenzy.
George Wallace, who took institutionalized racism as far as any modern presidential candidate ever has, was targeted in 1972 but survived and eventually (allegedly) recanted and disavowed his hatred for people of color, and in 1967, George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party, was assassinated at a Virginia laundromat, having survived earlier attempts on his life. I don't know quite how to categorize Malcolm X, but his death was arguably a political assassination as well.
