This happens constantly because a lot of the time the scanning equipment is not working properly and when somebody in the public returns a book it doesn't get scanned in as returned so the computer database is going to indicate that it is still checked out. If it remains this way for 6 months or a year they remove it from the card catalog even though the book is sitting on the shelf somewhere. Often it's not even in the right place because the public runs around taking a book off of the shelf and then putting it in another place where it's not supposed to be. To be honest one of the reasons that I don't work for libraries anymore is Is my experience is that in general the public sucks. They are terrible people who make assumptions that they should not make and they're just almost always absolutely nasty
