Anonymous sources have been used by credible reporters at reputable news outlets at least as far back as Watergate.

The important part is getting more than one source on the record to corroborate the story, which in this case has been done.

I recommend watching “All The President’s Men” for a dramatization of how using anonymous sources works. ( Unless, of course, you think Woodward and Bernstein were just speaking to cowardly weasels who just wanted to stab Nixon in the back).
