36. USMC, Vietnam Era

.... during an illegal war.

Many of us had serious problems with being in the service during a war we had come to detest during our time of service.
Some of us protested the war (this was a legal activity).
Some of us spent time in jail (not so very legally) for doing so.
I did both.
I also did my job, followed orders, was promoted several times, was invited to re-enlist and discharged honorably.
I went to college after discharge and told few people about where I had been.

I have never been at peace with my service and do not ask for thanks.

In a war like Viet Nam , honor is due those who followed their conscience and supported the war or objected to it.

I did both and survived but I claim no honor for it.
