Nashville native TJ Ducklo has been named as President-elect Joe Biden's deputy press secretary.

The Biden-Harris Transition team announced Ducklo's new role in a news release on Friday, which detailed roles in the new administration's communications, press, photo and digital strategy teams.

Ducklo currently serves as the spokesperson for the transition, and also worked as the Biden campaign's national press secretary.

“Speaking honestly, with empathy and directly to the public about our administration will be among the key pillars in this Presidency and White House," Biden said in the release. "At a time when American families are facing numerous challenges, these appointees will strengthen our administration’s ability to convey information to the American people and be integral in our team’s efforts to build our nation back better."

Ducklo, 32, has juggled the demands of the campaign and transition with treatment for stage 4 lung cancer.

The gene-targeted treatment, which sidesteps some of the harsher side effects of traditional chemotherapy, allowed him to stay on the campaign trail with his boss.

In phone interviews in October, Ducklo said there is no place he'd rather be.
The searing urgency of the Biden campaign pushed him past the fear, anxiety and uncertainty that comes with an advanced cancer diagnosis.

"It was part of how I dealt with it," Ducklo said. "I believed in the work I was doing, and I believed in the vice president. I wasn’t going to let being sick keep me from doing what I wanted to do."
