Mind you, I believe that ultimately Mao had a point, the barrel of a gun is far more simple than "the consent of the governed," and don't the coercive authorities in the USA have firearms aplenty to enforce the law? Did not firearms secure the political power to break away from Great Britain in the first place? Do not arms secure our nation even today? (by several magnitudes of overkill).
So there is a little "broken clock" to the statements of chaps like Mao. They may suck as people, but that doesn't mean they can't occasionally be right.
Using one of them as an authority to back up one's own opinions is a different thing, however. There are few ideas that are truly unique, and whom one chooses to quote to make a point tells us, perhaps, more about the speaker than the quote.
