Alexander Hamilton’s theory was that if the voters chose the scum of the earth as their president, the electors would choose an honorable man to replace him.

There are two yooge problems with that quaint notion.

First is that most of our states have laws against faithless electors, so now it’s illegal to do that.

The other is that about 98 percent of anyone willing to run for office as a Republican is the scum of the earth.
