SCOTUS Blocks Purdue Opioid Settlement [View all]

The SCOTUS has temporarily blocked the Purdue Pharma opioid settlement / bankruptcy agreement. The agreement would've shielded members of the Sackler family from civil liability. In other words it would let them keep the piles of money they made pushing opioid drugs.

The agreement was opposed by the BK Trustee and the Biden administration. Part of the agreement had the Sacklers contributing SIX BILLION DOLLARS. But they have an estimated family worth of $11b so they're not really going to be destitute.

Personally I think the agreement stinks. Why shouldn't they have civil liability? It's like gun manufacturers who have Immunity from lawsuits.

The SCOTUS will hear the case in the fall.
