I was in Genoa several years ago, US Counsel came to meet us. She said for us not to hesitate to call if there was anything she could do for us, so I asked her for a diplomatic tag (since parking was a nightmare, and we didn't want to get towed) and a "get out of jail free card". She laughed, I told her we knew the Ambassador, and she was like "yea, sure you do". So she went back to her office, called the Ambassador, he confirmed he knew us, and she came back to us with some kind of Special Counsel certificates ( which meant if we were arrested by police they had to take us to consulate instead of jail), and a tag to hang from mirror so we wouldn't get ticketed or towed.

The tag was a big help. The "get out of jail free card" of course we didn't need, but it was great fun showing it off to friends.
