16. The law doesn't work the way you want it to

It works the way it does. It can take years to get justice sometimes, and the defendants aren't always rich when it happens.

Tree of Life took 4.5 years from crime to conviction.

My rape case took almost 2.5 years from crime to conviction, and that was only because I accepted the plea deal. The prosecutor told me if we went to trial, then to expect to wait another year before we got to court, and more likely two, with no guarantee of conviction. I accepted the plea deal, not only to get the guaranteed conviction, but also to move on with my life. And that was 40 years ago. The system is even more backed up now than it was then.

The process has always been slow, and painful. That's just reality.

We don't have to like it, but changing it will not happen. Not unless we're willing to pay a whole lot more for more judges and courthouses. Most Americans aren't interested in that, in the least.
