...was not in the air at the time it was destroyed. And it is now clearly impossible to objectively ascertain what amount of fault then-Commander McCain may have had in that. Theories - from those who were there willing to talk about it - range from a childish afterburner prank that almost caused the carrier to sink, to great heroism in the face of an insane inferno with causes completely unrelated to his actions. Who knows? Only McCain knows.

But yeah - I don't believe there's ever been a Naval aviator who lost even two aircraft unrelated to enemy fire, and kept valid flight credentials.
