If they'd been curious enough to see just how far up the food chain and where the conspiracy went, they might have learned enough to create a path to "cooperative witness-ville". Tell me these whackos didn't actually believe the system would make exceptions for their sorry whining.
The great thing about the "greatest generation" is they never imagined they were better or more exceptional than others. They'd seen how the clever guys as well as the most unsophisticated were all ultimately the same in a very real and inescapable aspect. They were in true equality, all protentional enemy bullet stoppers.
