I know truly decent people who serve as such, generally because they have ties with the foreign country in some way, as well as being "connected" socially, commercially or politically in the US in ways helpful to the foreign country's interests, without necessarily being unhelpful to those of the US.

It's exactly your point - if it is true that Petraeus was involved in getting it for her - and that this "honorary consul" was also a "social liaison" to our top military commanders that bothers me about this situation.

Frankly, I don't mind seeing Petraeus go. If anything, it may cut down on these truly terrible drone killings that he favored.

But I AM sorry about the whole sordid situation.
