(4,229 posts)When surrounding Arab nations gathered in Gaza, on the West Bank, in the Golan Heights, on the Sinai peninsula preparing to destroy a tiny Jewish country (smaller than Vermont), Israel got wind of this an preemptively attacked, won the war in 6 days, and captured the land from where she was going to be attacked.
Israel has always offered the land back for peace and acknowledgment of their right to exist, yet only Egypt agreed (Sadat in 1978) and poof - they got the Sinai peninsula back.
Though the Palestinian territories are run by terrorist groups and have been a constant threat to Israel in my lifetime, the Israelis have always been retrained from leveling the area, in large part because Hamas et al use innocent citizens as shields (as they are doing now).
Both peoples had the opportunity to declare statehood in 1948, but only one did. The other, spurred on by its Arab neighbors has failed to acknowledge Israels right to exist and engaged in terror since 1948. This is really nothing new.
