... but anecdotal evidence suggests that it doesn't have to be very much money at all, and valuables like jewelry and laptops have been confiscated as well.

While I agree this is an abuse of power & theft (in many cases), why carry $$$$ in your carry on?

Some of us still use cash for transactions. If I were going on vacation, I would take some cash.
