(16,102 posts)House Democrats should make a good faith effort to avoid that calamity by making the following deal:
Fund the government on the basis of the agreement made earlier this year when the debt default was avoided, and Dems will cross the aisle to vote for a responsible Speaker.
I'm not saying the R's will actually nominate and put up for a vote one of their members willing to make that deal...
But our Democratic Party should make that offer.
Why? 2 reasons:
1. It's the responsible thing to do in serving the people who need our government funded.
2. It absolves Democrats from blame in this matter, and could help us win back the House next year.
Yes, I know we're not to blame in the first place, but public perception tends to blame "both sides" when government doesn't function. We need to destroy that narrative and turn this situation to our advantage.
