Abortion referendum offers Ohio Democrats a playbook for '24 [View all]

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Democrats up for reelection next year in an increasingly red Ohio are throwing themselves into this November’s ballot fight to enshrine abortion rights in the state Constitution.

They’re knocking on doors and phone banking in contested districts, speaking at rallies and in interviews in favor of the amendment, and attacking their GOP opponents for defending the state’s six-week abortion ban. The endangered candidates, and the Ohio Democratic Party fighting for their survival, are betting that supporting abortion rights in 2023 will position them for victory in 2024 as it has for many other swing state Democrats since Roe v. Wade fell.

“It is both the right thing to do and popular. But it’s popular because it’s the right thing to do,” said Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio), who represents a front-line Cincinnati district and is stumping for the measure.

Two other members the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee put on its list of most vulnerable “frontline” incumbents — Reps. Marcy Kaptur and Emilia Sykes — have gone door-knocking for the initiative, while Sen. Sherrod Brown has led phone banking efforts and raises the issue at most campaign stops as he pursues reelection in the conservative-leaning state.
