(10,032 posts)The Democratic party has been losing ground steadily in southern and border states for decades. In some instances, we'll pick up a Senate seat (Alabama) or governorship (Louisiana) only to see it slip away. Formerly purple Florida is now a basket case statewide although some recent mayoral wins raise a glimmer of hope. We did narrowly win two Senate seats in Georgia, but with some unwitting bumbling help from TFG. Texas? A mirage of sorts falling just short of the mark. Missouri? Arkansas? Iowa to the north? They seem lost. Or are they? Beshear stands out not only as a Democrat who can not only win in a red state but as one who manages to repeat that success. Throwing in the towel in places where success seems to evade Democrats only reinforces the notion that the party no longer matters. Politics, like everything else, evolves over time, and one key survival aspect along those lines is to do everything possible to preclude becoming extinct.
